How do you know a piece of furniture is well built?
Ask them where it's made. Generally, if it's Made in America, it's made better than cheap imports.
Sit on it. Test it. See what it feels like. If you sit on the couch and it falls all the way to the floor, it's probably not made real well.
You might check the weight. Weight denotes quality in lots of cases. Not always, but weight is a good indicator that it's quality.
Look and see if it's solid wood, bedroom furniture, dining room furniture. That's quality.

Ask the salesperson, "Do people bring this back, or do they enjoy it?" You know, just get a lot of info.
