How Mattress Mack Built Gallery Furniture from $3,500

How did Gallery Furniture start?

Good question. Well, my wife and I—I was in the furniture business in Dallas—wanted to start my own store. So, I noticed that this abandoned model home on the North Freeway was for rent.

My brother was in the real estate business in Houston back then, in the commercial real estate business. He called me about this location. I'd been bugging him to find me a location in Houston for a furniture store.

So, I moved to Houston with Linda, my wife, in April of 1981. We had $3,500. We went to work. We sold furniture on the side of the freeway out of these four abandoned model homes, and it was hot in the summer and cold in the winter, but we did what we had to do.

We delighted the customers, and guess what? We invented the same-day delivery, still at it 46 years later. That's how Gallery Furniture started.

It's the American dream. Get up, go to work, take care of customers, and do it all over again the next day.
